Latest New iPhone Concept Shows Edge-to-Edge Display

May 6, 2012

New iPhone display rumors are about as common as political scandals. In other words, you can expect to hear a new iPhone display rumor multiple times a month, if not multiple times a week. Most of these rumors obviously won’t come true, but some are a bit more likely to happen. And the long-standing rumor of a new iPhone with an Edge-to-Edge display? Well, it’s something that makes sense and may just end up being implemented in the iPhone 5.

First, let’s start with a recently released new iPhone Edge-to-Edge display concept. It’s actually one that shows what the new iPhone may look like with Liquidmetal–but even more importantly than this, it also shows an iPhone 5 with a screen that goes from Edge-to-Edge of the iPhone. That naturally means more viewing space and a presumably bigger screen size without significantly increasing the size of the new iPhone itself.

New iPhone

One thing you’ll also notice about the picture is that the screen appears stretched downwards and that the home button appears smaller. All of this of course points to the new iPhone display being larger and the form factor of the iPhone 5 being largely unchanged thanks to a few tricks with the display.

Now, normally, we’re not a fan of Justin Bieber or his music–but his new music video for the song “Boyfriend” is actually worth watching because it just might be showing us what an Edge-To-Edge iPhone 5 may look like. Below is a screenshot from the video:

iPhone 5

Look familiar? Well, it should as that looks an awful lot like an iPhone (based on the shape) and given the rumors of the Edge-To-Edge display, it would match the description perfectly. It’s slim, it features a big screen, and it’s sleek looking–all of which are expected attributes of the new iPhone.

However, it’s worth mentioning that there is no home button, speaker or camera visible in the screenshots….so it’s possible that Mr. Bieber may have been given an early prototype of the new iPhone to show off in the video. We can’t say for sure at this point.

So, readers, does the idea of an Edge-To-Edge iPhone 5 excite you?

I like the idea of the larger screen. That's one of the reasons I moved from the iPhone to and Android EVO. But with the edge-to-edge display – at least on the EVO the entire face of the phone is hot… or active, in that I am constantly triggering apps inadvertently, and launching things I don't want to launch, just by merely picking up the phone, or allowing my hand to wrap too far around onto the face of the phone.

However, if Apple does increase the screen size, as rumored, I will definitely be moving back to the iPhone, as I really miss my iPhone. And in spite of the uber sensitive screen real estate, I love the larger feel of the EVO.

I do not like it. If it's really edge to edge, then a part of the screen will always be blocked off by my fat fingers.

Hi Joe,

That is a good point. We're actually going to be looking at the pros and cons of Edge to Edge in an article this weekend. That's just one of the cons.

This isn't really about edge-to-edge screens but about gorilla glass. I was (surprisingly) reading a magazine (The New York Times Magazine) and there was an ad about Corning Gorilla Glass 2. It says NEW Corning Gorilla Glass 2 The damage resistance you demand, at a thinness that will astound you.
Slimmer & sleeker devices
Brighter images
Greater touch sensitivity

Corning Gorilla Glass 2 is as tough and scratch-resistant as ever to withstand the unexpected abuses of everyday life. But now it's thinner to enable superior device performance and a more sophisticated user experience. Look for it on the world's coolest smartphones, tablets, and PCs.

"To enable superior device performance"
"Look for it on the world's coolest smartphones, tablets, and PCs."

Sounds like the iPhone 5 to me. Or do you think that Corning will release a better version and Apple will use that? I'm curious.

Hi Joe,

That's interesting. I would take that to mean Gorilla Glass 2 is coming to the iPhone 5. I believe we posted an article a while back about Apple and Corning's new partnership and how it may mean Gorilla Glass for the iPhone. I still think that's possible, especially given this ad.

I'm trying to understand why anyone associated with this website would think it's something other than typical green-screen.

The edge to edge screen does look bigger. But its form factor does look very similar to Sony Xperia phones.. Especially the top portion. But wouldnt it be nice, if apple were to make it different from its competitors out there.?
Cos we have no idea till now how iphone 5 would look like…

The home button could be part of the touch screen, making there only a camera and other things so that it would be edge to edge to edge.

Hi Curtis,

Excellent point! We do think the home button will be touch screen as well.
