iPhone 5: Will It Get Released In June or October 2012?

April 16, 2012

As of late, we’ve been learning a lot about what features the iPhone 5 may have. We’ve heard all about the potential 3D component, the all but certain addition of 4G LTE, and even some talk of a vastly improved camera. We’ve also heard that there may just be two different iPhone 5 models released. But one thing that we haven’t heard yet–and it’s something that many possible iPhone 5 buyers are very anxious to hear about–is the release date for the device. We still don’t know for sure when the iPhone 5 will see its release, but we do have some arguments for why it’s likely to come out in one month and not the other.

Why We Think the iPhone 5 Will Be Released in June 2012

Let’s start with the obvious reason why the iPhone 5 will be out in June 2012: nearly all iPhones have seen their release in June. And it makes sense, as this is when Apple holds their World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) and they always promote a major Apple product at WWDC. For the past several years, Apple’s major product has been the iPhone. The iPhone 4S, of course, was the exception to this “rule” as it came out in October 2011. The only reason for this is that the 4S as delayed. Without the delays, it would have come out in June 2011.

Another reason why the iPhone 5 will most likely come out in June 2012 is that Apple is already considered to be “behind the times” when compared to Android. This is mostly due to the fact that the nearly all new Android devices come with the coveted 4G LTE technology, whereas no iPhones currently have 4G LTE. For Apple to compete with Android, the iPhone 5 will need to have 4G LTE–and it will need to be released soon to help Apple regain momentum. Fall 2012 is too late, while a June 2012 iPhone 5 release date seems just right.

Finally, another reason why the iPhone 5 will come out in June 2012 is that the iPhone 5 is likely to sell better in the summer months than in the fall/winter. This may seem a bit odd as the winter months include the massive sales holiday that is Christmas, but as evidenced by the incredible sales of previous iPhone models released during the summer, the iPhone just tends to do best sales-wise in June, with all of the birthdays and graduations.

I think your analysis is spot on. Apple needs to play catch up in a way to Android phones, which are truly great machines. I'm a big fan of Apple, but even I've considered getting an Android to replace my idiotic Blackberry (work thing) as soon as possible. If I had to wait until October, I'd be even more tempted.

October is a weird time. It's not quite Christmas, yet past summer. Also, at Christmas, the i5 would be competing with a whole bunch of other electronics and deep discounts. In June, as you said, summer is here. People will be outside a lot more. Kids are graduating, beginning summer jobs, etc. Plus, Apple would have no competition in June.

But, what do you make of the quote that appeared last week from the Foxconn employee who said they just got the order and would begin production to be ready for October?
